The affected persons aren't aliens (you may find an exception); we had a life like everybody's else until ALS broke in. In our place it could have been any other, and the future cases live peacefully today, unaware of what is coming to them. This is like in lottery: most probably you won't be awarded in your whole life, but every week one is.
Health has little to do with productivity and a lot with the quiality of life. If a problem is to be solved, besides looking for a medical solution that allows a preventive treatment in future cases, it is also necessary to apply the human and technical resources so that the new affected persons can go on with their lives under the best possible conditions.
Sometimes the remedy to a problem like ALS depends on a tragic causality. The fact that a new case of ALS appears on well known persons or persons with a high wealthy level may give a big impulse to our fight. Cases like Magic Johnson in AIDS or Josep Carreras in Leukaemia prove this. In our community those sponsors who could give the necessary boost to our small Association still haven't appear. We hope it won't be in its most tragic way that these cases appear.
The means and the effort to achieve these solutions should come in first place from those families that have lived directly the problem. In only half of the affected families in the Valencian Community were associated to ADELA C.V. and 10% of them took part actively, we would be able to offer all the help requested. Knowing closely a big problem like ALS and doing nothing to help those who are currently suffering it is a big sign of insolidarity that is not justified by the will of forgetting what has been suffered in the past.
Society as a whole (public and private institutions, enterprises and individuals) should understand that the seriousness of a problem is not always given by the number of people affected. ALS is a disease that doesn't warn. Neither the ambiental factors, nor the risk groups, nor familiar background, nor unhealthy habits, nothing allows at the moment an advanced diagnosis; everybody is under its threat and is everybody's responsibility to end it as soon as possible. Its dramatic consequences give a good enough reason to solidary support the fight against this cruel disease.
